Mechanisms of economic space integration and synchronization of the Volga regions development

The objective of this study is to develop mechanisms for the spatial integration of innovation‑active and innovation‑peripheral regions based on the concept of an «innovation hypercluster» (using the Volga Federal District as a case study). Methods. The research draws on statistical analysis of Rosstat data for 2015–2024 across 14 constituent entities of the Volga Federal District, the calculation of an integral index of innovation potential (IIP), and econometric modeling (multiple linear regression) to assess the impact of interregional cooperation on the volume of innovative output. Results. The paper substantiates the concept of an innovation hypercluster as a networked macro‑regional structure that facilitates the integration of innovation‑active and innovation‑peripheral regions. A persistent differentiation among the regions of the Volga Federal District is identified: innovation cores (Tatarstan, Nizhny Novgorod and Samara Oblasts), technology hubs (Bashkortostan, Perm Krai), and the innovation periphery (the remaining regions of the district). A structural‑functional model of the hypercluster is proposed, comprising a coordination center, end‑to‑end technological chains, and a unified digital platform. The structural‑functional model of the hypercluster includes three hierarchical levels and a system of institutional integration mechanisms. Econometric analysis also confirms the significant influence of interregional cooperation. Conclusions. The proposed model is expected to reduce innovation polarization, expand the diffusion of innovative technologies, and integrate the innovation space of the Volga Federal District as a macroregion.
