The purpose of the study, the results of which are presented in the article, is to characterize the formation of the ESG agenda in the socio-economic development strategies of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. Research methods: content analysis of regional socio-economic development strategies in force in 2024 according to the semantic units «ESG» and «sustainable development», comparison, generalization, structural and graphic analysis. Results: it is shown that the role of regional governments in promoting the ESG agenda is not sufficiently covered in the scientific literature. The advantages of a hierarchical system for managing socio-economic processes in China are presented, contributing to the growth in the number of companies implementing the ESG agenda. Based on a generalization of the results of a content analysis of the socio-economic development strategies of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, the unclearness of the formation of the regions’ positions in relation to the promotion of the ESG agenda, the lack of a systematic presentation of ESG principles in most of the analyzed documents was revealed. Main conclusions: the pace and scale of ESG implementation in companies is significantly ahead of the work of regional authorities in this direction in most constituent entities of the Federation. This imbalance creates threats to the economic security of the regions, which may arise in the absence of support for enterprising entrepreneurs who adhere to ESG principles and current vectors of socio-economic development, which can lead to a technological lag and a slowdown in economic growth.
