The goal is to characterize their content as an element of a new paradigm of financial economics. With this objective, we address the prerequisites for the development of green finance in the context of the financial systems evolution; consider the content of green finance in the system of thematic areas of sustainable finance; and discuss the trends in the green finance development through the prism of the preferences of consumers and suppliers of sustainable financial services. The research shows that the prerequisites for the development of green finance are largely formed by the contradictions of modern financial systems functioning. Green finance is the basis of sustainable finance, the superstructures of which are social finance, finance of sustainable corporate governance and a sustainable economy. The trends in the development of green finance are largely determined by the intention for market equilibrium. However, along with positive changes, new challenges arise that require a constructive response from the state and other stakeholders.
